A finite path to an endless goal
Belts and dans
Nine belts have a first and a last. The dans that follow have no last. Three Seals is built on that idea: a path you can see the end of, leading to a goal you never finish.
Train your fighter
Slide to train. Nine belts take you to black; after that, every 250 points is another dan, and your belt colour shows on your fighter in every duel.
Bounded, and without bounds
A belt is a promise you can keep. It tells you exactly how far you have come and exactly what the next step is. That clarity is why belts exist: a path without markers is a path most people leave.
But a path with a final marker has a hidden danger. If black is the end, then the day you tie it is the day you stop learning. So in the night temple, black is not the end. It is the first belt that has no colour after it.
Beyond black come the dans. They are counted, so you always know where you stand, but they are never finished, so there is always somewhere to stand next. The goal is not to arrive. The goal is to keep walking with your eyes open.
What each belt means in the temple
- White belt
The empty cup. You know the cycle and nothing else, which is exactly enough to begin.
- Yellow belt
The first light. You have won a few duels and started to see why.
- Orange belt
The spark. Your cards start to work together instead of one at a time.
- Green belt
The sprout. You play for your shelf, not just for the round.
- Blue belt
Deep water. You notice what the master's shelf needs, not only your own.
- Purple belt
Dusk. Your plans have more than one path, so a closed door does not stop you.
- Brown belt
Old wood. Patience has become a habit, and habits have become choices.
- Red belt
The ember. You can read a master while the master is reading you.
- Black belt
The night itself. Not an ending: the first belt with nothing after it but dans.
How belts are earned
- Every victory earns belt points. Your fighter wears the colour of your belt in every duel.
- Losing never takes points away. A bad day cannot undo a good month.
- Winning streaks pay a bonus, so consistency is rewarded more than luck.
- After black, every 250 points is another dan, with no limit.
