How to win a duel in Three Seals
Three Seals looks simple, and it is. Most players still lose their first duels for the same reason: they play the round in front of them and forget the shelf behind them. This guide walks through the whole game in the order that it actually matters.
1. Every card is fire, wood or water
When two different elements meet, the element decides and the numbers do not. Fire burns wood. Wood drinks water. Water puts out fire. A water 2 beats a fire 12, every time.
Read the element first. Only look at the number when both cards share an element.
2. Same element? The number decides
If both cards are fire, the higher number wins. Numbers run from 2 to 12. If the numbers are also equal, it is a tie: the cards knock together and nobody takes one.
This is where the Power move matters. It adds +3 to your card for one round, and it can only be used once per duel, so save it for a same-element clash you would otherwise lose by a little.
3. The winning card goes to your shelf
Every card you win is placed on your shelf. Look at the coloured dot in the corner of each card: that is its seal, and it comes in red, blue, gold or purple. Seals are what win the duel, not the number of cards.
4. Two shapes win
- Three of one element: three cards of the same element, each with a different seal colour.
- One of each element: a fire, a wood and a water card, again with three different seal colours.
A second card with a seal colour you already have does not count twice. A red fire and another red fire are still one red fire.
5. Watch both shelves
The master is building a shelf too. Before you pick a card, ask two questions: which card moves my shelf closer to a winning shape, and which element would let the master finish? Sometimes the best move is not the card that helps you most, but the one that closes the master's door.
6. The clock is real
Every turn has a clock. Peanut gives you 12 seconds, Tosby 9 and Huma 6. If it runs out, the master picks a card for you, and the master picks the card that suits the master best.
The fastest way to learn all of this is to try it. Our interactive lesson on the How to play page lets you trigger every rule yourself, and you can play a full round against Tosby without installing anything.
